Cabaret

Cabaret
Outgoing Sally Bowles works as a performer/singer at the illustrious Kit Kat Klub in 1931 Berlin. Brian Roberts arrives on the scene fresh from Cambridge University, eager to take on a job teaching English. Looking for a place to live, Brian takes a room at the boarding house where Sally lives and is soon drawn into the decadent social world of the cabaret. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching “Cabaret”.

· Fraulein Schneider brings in coffee and cake for Fritz, Natalia, Sally and Brian. Fritz offers Natalia a piece of cake on a plate. Natalia refuses, saying she’s not eating between meals. Sally remarks, “I’m eating…”, and Brian grabs the plate and hands it to her. In the wider view, the cake falls in Sally’s lap. It cuts to a close-up of Sally and the piece of cake is on the rights side of her chest.

· Sally is performing “Money”. During the beginning of the song, her nail polish is noticeably green. The close-up view of Sally, when she sings the line “freeze in the winter…”, she has her left hand on her right arm and the polish on her fingernails is a dark rust color. They’re green again when she’s having drinks with Brian and Max.

· Sally and Brian are arguing about Max in her room. She mentions “he’s suave…” and the purple scarf she’s wearing is completely covering her left shoulder. Brian starts to yell and the view from behind her shoulder shows the scarf is pulled back.

· Sally is signing “Cabaret”. At the beginning of the number, the top layer of her dress crosses from her right to her left. A few moments later, it crosses from her left to right. The dress is right to left again in the close-up when Sally sings, “life is a cabaret”.

“Cabaret” (1972) stars Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Helmut Griem, Joel Grey, Fritz Wepper, Marisa Berenson, Elisabeth Neumann-Viertel and Helen Vita. It runs 124 minutes and is rated PG due to alcohol, drugs and smoking and mild language.
